Aligning With California Education Standards
InvestEd’s 10-lesson series is meticulously aligned with over 70 California academic standards, ensuring that students not only build essential financial literacy skills but also enhance their understanding of key math and language arts academic subjects in the State of California requirements.
Math Standards Covered:
Numbers & Operations in Base Ten (NBT):
Students develop a deeper understanding of multi-digit operations by applying them to real-world financial scenarios. Through hands-on activities, they practice adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing money, as well as calculating expenses, income, and savings. This reinforces their ability to solve real-life financial problems, such as budgeting for purchases, making change, and understanding the impact of different financial choices.
Measurement & Data (MD):
Financial literacy requires the ability to interpret and analyze data. Students learn how to read, compare, and create graphs and charts to track expenses, savings, and investment growth. They also explore how to measure financial outcomes, such as comparing loan interest rates, tracking stock market performance, and assessing the value of long-term savings plans.
Fractions (NF):
Fractions play a key role in everyday financial decisions. Students explore practical applications of fractions in finance, such as calculating discounts, interest rates, and savings growth over time. They also use fractions to divide money among different savings goals and analyze percentage-based expenses, such as taxes and tips.
Language Arts Standards Covered:
Common Core Reading (CCR)
Students strengthen their ability to read and interpret financial documents, such as receipts, contracts, banking statements, and stock reports. They also analyze informational texts related to economic principles, developing the literacy skills needed to make sense of complex financial information in their everyday lives.
Writing (W)
Clear communication is essential in personal finance. Students practice writing about financial topics, including creating a personal budget, setting financial goals, and explaining investment decisions. Through structured writing assignments, they learn to express their financial reasoning and document their money management plans.
Speaking & Listening (SL)
InvestEd encourages collaborative discussions on financial decision-making. Students engage in group activities where they present budgeting strategies, debate financial choices, and share insights on saving and investing. These exercises help them build confidence in discussing financial topics with peers, parents, and teachers.
